Good stream audio does not require a purchase. The software that matters most is already free, the microphone you own is probably adequate, and the biggest improvements come from placement and patience, neither of which costs anything. What money buys later is convenience and a bit of polish. If you are starting out, spend nothing until you have squeezed everything from the chain below.
Start with what costs nothing: the room and the mic position
Before opening any software, fix the physical side, because every filter works better on a cleaner input.
Get the microphone close to your mouth. With a headset this is already handled, so bend the boom until the capsule sits near the corner of your mouth and slightly off to the side, where your breath will not hit it. With a desk mic and no boom arm, a stack of books does the job of raising it to chin height and bringing it toward you. Closer means you can lower the gain, and lower gain means less room, less keyboard, less everything else.
Next, deal with the room. Hard, bare rooms sound echoey, and no free plugin fixes echo convincingly. Close the curtains, leave the wardrobe door open so the clothes absorb sound, throw a blanket over the hard surface behind your monitor. Shut the door, and move the PC tower as far from the mic as its cables allow.
The free software worth installing
OBS Studio is the backbone. It is free and open source, and its audio filters cover most of what a paid voice processor would do: noise suppression, a noise gate, a compressor, a limiter and gain. It also loads VST plugins, which opens the door to free third-party equalizers and other effects if the built-in tools are not enough.
If you talk with teammates, Discord brings its own built-in noise suppression and echo cancellation for the voice channel side, so your squad gets a cleaned-up version of you without any extra work.
Owners of an RTX-class NVIDIA graphics card have another free option in NVIDIA Broadcast, which uses the GPU for noise removal and is strong on difficult sounds such as keyboards and nearby voices. And SteelSeries Sonar, part of the company’s free desktop software, works with any headset and adds virtual audio devices so that game, chat and mic can be controlled and routed separately. One warning applies to all of them. Do not stack two noise removers on the same microphone. Running GPU noise removal and then OBS suppression on top produces a thin, warbling voice and wastes processing power. Choose one cleaner and let the rest of the chain do other jobs.
Wiring the chain together in OBS
Add filters to your mic source in this order, since each one processes the output of the one above it. Noise suppression goes first so it works on the raw signal. The noise gate comes next, to silence the gaps between sentences. The compressor follows, evening out the distance between your quiet commentary and your loud reactions. The limiter sits last as a safety ceiling so a sudden shout never distorts.
Set each filter conservatively. The aim of a gate is silence when you are silent, not a voice that snaps in and out. The aim of a compressor is consistency, not a radio-announcer squash.
Then balance the mix. Your voice should sit clearly above the game at all times. A practical approach is to set the mic so normal speech peaks in the upper part of the OBS meter without touching the red, then pull game audio down until your voice is never buried during the loudest moments of play.
Test like a viewer, for free
Your ears in the moment are unreliable, and asking chat is worse. Use the record button instead. Capture two minutes of real gameplay with commentary, including a quiet stretch and an excited one, then watch it back on your phone speaker and again on earbuds, since that is how most of the audience will hear it. Note one problem, fix it, record again.
When spending finally makes sense
Eventually the free chain hits a ceiling, and you will know when, because the same limitation will keep appearing in your test recordings. If the mic will not stay in position, a boom arm is the first purchase. If the room is the issue, some thick fabric or panels. A new microphone comes after those, not before. Until a specific, repeated problem points to a specific product, your wallet can stay closed and your stream can still sound like you know what you are doing.
